Most of you have probably heard of Laniakea (aka Turtle Beach). It's one of the first beaches travelers reach when heading North from Waikiki to the North Shore of Oahu. Turtles do come up on the beach to have a snack and take a break.... especially in summer months when the North swells subside. But it is never guaranteed that they will be there waiting. When visiting Laniakea, please be respectful of the protected turtles... and also local North Shore residents. Environmentalists are always on hand to see to the care of the beached turtles. One should not come within 10 feet of the turtles. It can result in a $10,000 fine! The traffic backs up at this beach because everyone loves turtles. Local North Shore residents deal with this bumper to bumper traffic all day, every day... even when there are no turtles hanging out.
And it's not the only place to see the Hawaiian Sea Turtle up close! In fact, if turtles are your thing, you will have a much more natural experience if you are willing to go out on the water at certain spots around the island. So if Hawaiian Sea Turtles are on your bucket list, consider going out into their world to actually swim with them. They are curious creatures... and pretty cute too!
