Indigenous to Australia, Macadamia Nut Seeds were first brought to Hawaii in the late 1800’s. By the early 1920’s, Mac Nuts were being farmed commercially in the area around Mount Tantalus, and were processed in the Kakaako area of Honolulu. These days, only small scale farming of Macadamia Nuts still exists on the island. Tropical Farms is at the heart of this effort. Located close to Kualoa Ranch, Tropical Farms is a great stop while driving along the Northeast section of Oahu. The visitor center provides complimentary Mac Nut roasted coffee, as well as samples of the different flavored roasted nuts available. Crack your own Macadamia Nut and try it unroasted. Just watch out for the chickens!
