The Hula Competition: A Showcase of Hawaiian Culture

The Merrie Monarch Festival is an unparalleled celebration of Hawaiian culture, and the hula competition is undoubtedly the highlight of the event. The competition is divided into two categories: Kahiko and Auana. Kahiko is the traditional form of hula, which is accompanied by chanting and traditional instruments such as the pahu and ipu. In contrast, Auana is a more modern form of hula, which is accompanied by music and instruments like the ukulele and guitar. The competition is an opportunity for hula dancers from around the world to showcase their skills and celebrate the rich traditions of Hawaiian culture.
The dancers who participate in the competition are the true stars of the show. They put in months of hard work and practice to perfect their movements, costumes, and storytelling abilities. When they take the stage, the results are nothing short of breathtaking. Their performances transport you to another world, and you'll find yourself swept up in the beauty and magic of their movements. The judges evaluate the dancers' skill, choreography, and interpretation of the music and story. Through this competition, the festival aims to preserve and promote the ancient art form of hula, and celebrate the cultural heritage of Hawaii.

Beyond Hula: Exploring the Rich Culture of Hawaii

While the hula competition is undoubtedly the main event, the Merrie Monarch Festival offers so much more. The festival is a week-long extravaganza filled with cultural events and activities that showcase the unique and vibrant culture of Hawaii. The festival starts with a grand parade, which features colorful floats, traditional costumes, and live music. The Iolani Palace VS the White House

Did you know that Iolani Palace was so technologically advanced that it had electricity before the White House? That's right!  The Iolani Palace isn't just a gorgeous building with a fascinating history. It's also an innovative marvel that was way ahead of its time! The palace was built in 1882 and was one of the first buildings in Hawaii to have electricity. Can you believe that?! Just a few years after Thomas Edison demonstrated the first practical incandescent light bulb in 1879, the palace already had electric lighting installed.
But wait, there's more! The palace also had a telephone system installed in 1887, which was practically unheard of in those days. It was so fancy that the palace even had its own in-house telephone exchange. Palace employees would connect calls between the palace and other parts of Honolulu. Can you imagine how exciting that must have been for the people who lived there?
In addition to all of that, the palace also had some other incredible features that made it an ultra-modern building for its time. It had indoor plumbing, which was super rare at the time, and the bathrooms were fitted with the latest technology, including flushing toilets and hot and cold running water. Plus, the palace had a central ventilation system that circulated fresh air throughout the building, keeping it cool in the tropical Hawaiian climate. All of these amazing features made Iolani Palace an incredibly advanced building for its time and a true marvel to behold.

ALOHA!

My name is TARO!

I've just joined the team and I'll basically be posting about Hawaii on blog, YouTube, and social media. I'm psyched to show you guys this beautiful Oahu.

I’m gonna share the footage of the drone shooting around the Hilton Lagoon with you and it will be a good start-up for your amazing trip.

In this drone shooting, I was able to get a panoramic view of the horizon of the beautiful ocean, Ala Wai Yacht Harbor, famous for its beautiful sunset scenery, and downtown all in one luxurious view! The view of Diamond Head from Duke Kahanamoku Beach right in front of you is 100% paradise! Duke Kahanamoku Beach, which has been selected the No. 1 beach in the U.S. in the past, is a wonderful beach right in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village and is my favorite beach.

Stay tuned!

The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, North Shore Oahu

12/26/2019

We had a near miss this weekend with the incoming North Swell.  Unfortunately, the peak of the swell will arrive in the night time on Monday night.  Conditions will not be up to par and the contest is off... for now.  However, the holding period for the contest continues until February 29.  So fingers crossed that we will get another whopper of a swell sometime soon!

Regardless, get up to the North Shore on Monday or Tuesday to see the freesurfers at Waimea.  Conditions should be pretty nice for a little exhibition!

Pele's Chair on the Southeast Coast of Oahu, Hawaii

Pele's Chair is a very distinctive rock formation on the southeast coast of Oahu.  Facing Molokai, Lanai, and Maui, it is said to be the final resting place of the volcano goddess, Pele, the creator of volcanoes and the goddess of fire, after creating Oahu and before moving along to form the southernmost islands of Hawaii.  It has become a popular hike that acts as a tangent trail to Makapu'u.  This is a hot hike, but moderate to easy depending on your approach.   Check it out!!!
